Bottle tracking as a method to help protect the wine industry.
Every year the wine industry loses billions of euros to wine counterfeiting and illicit trade.
The
EU-funded TRACEWINDU (Traceability at wine industry through integrated labelling of typicity, health protection effect and organoleptic attributes) project aims to ensure and improve the traceability of wine along the entire value chain through the use of
smart labeling and data recording techniques using blockchain technology. This will enable consumers to
make purchases based on complete and reliable information about the production process.
In addition, the project will work toward the goal of i
mproving vineyard productivity using plant protection products and geographic origin analysis solutions as part of a multi-approach strategy to ensure wine traceability and authentication.
TENUTA DEL CASTELLO is the only italian
wine producer partner participating in the project.
Objectives:
The wine market has changed dramatically over the past fifty years, moving from small, uncommon domestic markets reserved for specialists to the globalized web revolution. The wine industry is an important part of both agriculture and the food industry in many countries (i.e. ES, FR and IT alone account for a total of 32% of the world's vineyard area, being among the world's top 5 grape producers in 2018). However,
the wine industry is threatened by counterfeit products and illicit trafficking. The overall research and technology development goal of TRACEWINDU is to improve vineyard productivity using a new combination of plant protection products, while at the same time geographic origin analysis is integrated into a multi-approach strategy to ensure wine traceability/authentication. This approach will be correlated with the results obtained from sensory analysis to generate a table of data tagging scores in the form of a
product passport included in the smart tags.
Smart tags are physical labels with unique item-level identifiers in the form of QR codes for sharing digital and dynamic information and providing all relevant product information throughout the product lifecycle and product data transparency by facilitating decentralized blockchain technology.
Through the implemented smart tags, TRACEWINDU supports the traceability of bottles directly to the producer and every time a bottle changes hands, the origin is updated and ownership is transferred and those bottles certified at the time and place of production by producers will have even more value in secondary markets.
Overall,
TRACEWINDU aims to promote, improve, and develop permanent international and cross-sectoral collaboration between academic research centers and the private sector by enhancing the exchange of knowledge, best practices, know-how, innovations, experiences, mutual cooperation, and work culture in different regions and countries (ES, FR, IT, ME, RS, AR) through a series of planned mobility of researchers.
Meeting between INNOLABS, Tenuta del Castello and UAB (Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona).
In September 2022, Dr. Nicola Tucci from INNOLABS, Dr. Valentina Cavaliere and Dr. Roberto Guglielmi from Tenuta Castello were at UAB together with faculty members from the same university to implement TRACEWINDU project activities. The visit was an opportunity to update the status of the project's communication and dissemination activities and, in particular, to agree on specific actions to be implemented in the following months in WP4 and WP5.
During the visit, the partners agreed on the protocol to be implemented in the Castle Estate to clearly represent the difference between vineyards treated with TRACEWINDU methodology and untreated vineyards.
